The character I chose to interview was Harrington, who is the caretaker of the vineyard and Troy and Lola’s guardian. I loved the little bit I read about him in The Lady of the Vineyard, so I was more than excited to get to know him a little bit better in Souls Astray. He’s such a grump and I adore him :))) My questions will be in bold.

What attracted you to Troy and Lola and why did you raise them instead of handing them off to someone else?

I made a promise to their uncle. That was good enough for me. I may not be a lot of things, but I’m a man of my word unless I say something too stupid.

What’s your opinion on children in general?

Dashed little nuisances, but necessary. We all have to be children, after all. The trick is to bear them through those stupid stages and realize that better things – e.g. adulthood- are coming.

What was your first impression when Troy brought Adele to the vineyard?

That I had best run and hide. That woman is trouble. All brunettes are trouble – you mark my words. People talk about redheads a lot – oh, yes, avoid gingers. But they never mention brunettes. They sneak up and murder you in your sleep. I’ve seen it happen.

What do you love best about the vineyard?

It’s quiet, and I can hide in my room during the harvest. Henri filled the place with nice little nooks.

What Russian novel are you currently reading?

The Brothers Karamazov. Depressing, as always.

Do you have any other hobbies besides sleeping, taking care of the vineyard, and reading?

Not answering stupid questions is a good hobby which I occasionally indulge in. I also drink coffee religiously.

Why don’t you like the name Millard?

Because it’s stupid. I’d rather be John. That’s a good name.
